Ruth Lorenzo

Working 9 to 5 at 13!

24 Nov 08

To be a record maker, dedication's what you need...

On Saturday, Cheryl Cole praised Ruth Lorenzo for adapting well to the British culture during her X Factor stay.

Spaniard Ruth has taken to her new surroundings amazingly well - perhaps because it isn't the first time she's had to swap cultures completely.

Ruth was ten when, with her parents newly divorced, she went with her mum and brother to stay in the USA.

She told us, "It was quite strange because I couldn't speak any English - we'd only spoken French at school".

"When people come to my country, I love it when they try to speak Spanish. They eat our food and find out about our culture, and I wanted to do the same there."

"So I had to learn fast. It took me (clicks fingers) this to learn English. I got awards in everything."

"And I loved it. I was in the US for four, five years, and I started going to singing competitions, and dance competitions, and I was in the swim team."

But Ruth's mum, unable to pick up the language quickly, wasn't able to work. Ruth told us, "I had a lot of responsibility with my mum and little brother, so at thirteen I went to work at Burger Supreme".

She said, "Thirteen is young to be working, but I've always been a big girl. I was the size I am now at eleven. People never thought I was under age. So no-one found out".

The long hours, however, took their toll on Ruth's academic career. She told us; "In the US you have to get good grades in your subjects to be allowed to do the extra-curricular after-school clubs, but my grades were poor because I was working so hard".

An exhausted Ruth had to quit the swim team and even missed her junior prom. She said, "Sometimes it was hard because my friends were out having fun, but my family were most important".

Her desire to sing, however, continued to shine through.

She explained, "I begged them; 'I am doing my best I can just now. Just please don't kick me out of my singing class".

The school authorities relented. Ruth said, "I am very grateful for how kind and loving they were towards me".

"And against regulations, they let me stay in the choir..."

Okay Nursejones, we all know you were dropped on your head at birth and it's addled your brain!

Well, after Rachel was kicked out we thought it was end of sob-stories, but aparently not!

Hello Nurse Jones, contrary to your thoughts i have not fallen for anything . I dont read it as a sob story, she was obviously interviewed about Cherys comments and it went on from there , unlike some others that have participated and moaned and sulked, Ruth has been very gracious, and as for being more susceptible than others , your words are really wasted on me. I dont know what your beef is about Ruth but you are getting very boring with your negative dejavous one liners .

Just saying that it is nonetheless a nicely time sob story.

I Ruth should be applauded for the initiative she showed, not mocked as they are by the likes of nursejones and bigstar68. The young kids would be far better respected if they followed this example instead of hanging around on street corners and getting bladdered on bottles of Buckfast!

Nursejones, a Rachel supporter - figures, not only does she understand the difference between a sob story and a life experience, she doesn't know a good thing from a bad. Bigstar68 - this issue not about working it's about determination. No-one forced Ruth to work at thirteen she had the initiative to do it herself....the only sob issue here is that yourself and Nursejones don't understand it - it doesn't take a genius really, think about it!

I don´t know if people realize that there are plenty of people that work from an early age as young as 7 year old in some countries. In Spain plenty of people(not nowdays because is ilegal like in England)worked 10 to 12 hours a day from very young because a few years back a lot of families in Spain struggled to survive. So a sob story definitely..so she knows now how "english culture" works. Good luck to all the contestants!!!!

hi Louise, you obviously fell for the belated sob story......ah well some more susceptible than others.

louisebrooks25/11/2008 21:37:30

Nurse Jones needs another avenue, now Rachel has left she hasnt anyone to cheer lead for , quite pathetic realy!. Ruth is a diamond and has heart, you see how she feels for others , her voice is amazing, her or Alex to win
