Hello guys and gals!

Tonight the contestants had to sing two songs - a Britney Spears number and a great American classic - to fight for their place in next week’s semi-final…

At this stage in the competition the pressure is immense. The X Factor contestants don’t only work on a Saturday night, oh no! They work twelve to fourteen hours a day, getting up at ‘stupid’ o’clock and not falling into bed 'til way past midnight each night. This contributes to their emotional state because they all “want it” so bad (as we did last year). The combination of tiredness and worry creates this over-emotional state. Anyway, let's have a chat about the contestants - who all seemed to be in tears at some point during the night!

Ruth
Ruth, who Cheryl described as “The rock chick of the show” gave two impressive, highly contrasting, performances. I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll was a fabulous track; we loved the routine with the props and the dancers, but her best performance had to be the Bon Jovi classic, Always. To attempt a song like that was so brave and Ruth gave a spectacular, emotional performance. It was completely overwhelming for her to perform - and for us to watch, too!

We expected the judges to go wild after that, but they were really placid - very weird. We didn't understand this as she definitely deserved a standing ovation!

When the result was announced we were stunned! We love Ruth, and can’t wait to see her live on the tour. As she said," her career is just beginning”.

JLS
It is incredibly difficult for a boyband to perform a song originally done by a solo female singer. This was probably the most challenging week for them to date. Hit Me Baby One More Time was a huge hit, and they faced it head on creating a version that was completely their own. After that, they delivered You Light Up My Life. It is a beautiful song - and they sang it incredibly well.

Alexandra
For us, Alexandra has been the most consistent through out the series and we didn’t think she could get any better - but she did! At the end of her second performance we stood up to applaud in front of the telly because she was so incredible! Toxic was a fun performance, she sang and moved really well but it was the second song, Listen by Beyonce, it BLEW US AWAY! To us, this was undoubtedly the performance of the series and if Britney can sell 80million records, so can Alexandra! We just hope that she hasn't peaked too soon!

Eoghan
Poor Eoghan was clearly uncomfortable with his Britney song; He looked really nervous! This is totally out of character for him because he is a really cheerful, lovely lad. It was never going to be easy for the boys this week. We were worried for him until... we discovered he'd sing All In This Together from HSM! What a great song choice on Simon's part! We loved Brian's choreography (It took us back to last year and our Breaking Free performance!) and we thought it was brilliant!

Diana
We worry about Diana as her emotions seem to be running high. She is still very popular and has a huge fan base but it is crucial to stay positive at this point in the competition. She looked gorgeous in her black dress with the pearls; it was very classy looking. We enjoyed the REM song a lot more than the Britney one and thought it was a great song choice for her! She put her heart and soul into this performance!

Overall Alexandra was unbelievable this week and on the strength of that performance alone deserves a million pound record deal (come on Simon)!

Oh yes Colliedug the entire population of Ireland would vote for Owen and the whole of Spain vote for Ruth. What a sad, silly, banal and racist comment to make. Do you think Owen is there because the whole of Northern Ireland voted for him. I've read some silly posts on here but your one takes some beating.

I agree with *beckz* other than one thing. Well as everyone knows, Britney was miming her live performance but this series, the amount of guest performers is ridiculous. Wasn't it a bit obvious that Same Difference were also lip syncing? They obviously do not have star quality and only little kids enjoy them. i don't think they will last very long in the music industry.

Who are same difference to judge anyone on their singing, i saw them live and they're not all that, they're just entertaining for kids aged 7-10 Diana would outsell them any day of the week, i think Diana would sell more records than any of the contestants left on the show! KEEP VOTING FOR DIANA!

It would also offer an opportunity for people outside the UK to take their part in creating the next big singing star. Ruth would probably still be in the competition if online voting was in operation this year. Eoghan would probably benefit too. So what about it, X Factor Team? Why not make next year's competition a truly global exercise and initiate online voting?

colliedug01/12/2008 21:31:22

I think Littlemisace's idea of online voting would be an excellent option for next year. Surely it cannot be too complicated to set up a page on the X Factor website for voting purposes. It would offer a means of restricting people to one vote per week, for the act of their choice, because I think half the trouble with the phonelines is that they get engaged because folk are voting several times for the same act and stopping other people from getting through to cast their's. ... (TBC)...
